Description
Colwich Lock Number 21 is a narrow lock on the Trent and Mersey Canal, built between 1766 and 1770, with some materials and movable parts replaced later. It was designed by James Brindley, the Surveyor General. The lock features a brick chamber with stone coping and quoins. It has a single steel top gate and double steel bottom gates, both installed in the late 20th century. A wooden plank footbridge crosses the tail of the lock, and there is an off-side weir. The Trent and Mersey Canal itself was constructed between 1766 and 1777.
