Description
Colwich Bridge Number 71 is a canal accommodation bridge built between 1766 and 1770, designed by James Brindley, the Surveyor General. The bridge is constructed of red brick with stone coping and features a single span with a humped back, lacking a towpath. It has an elliptical headed arch, with swept wings that end in piers on the lower side and a trailing edge on the upper towpath side. Stone quoins are present at the jambs up to the springing point. There are stone plaques at the crown on both sides, each with a cast iron number plate attached. Cast iron guard plates are installed on the parapet on both sides. Late 20th century concrete steps lead down to the lower level on the towpath side. Minor repairs have been made, including a section of the pier on the lower off-side. The Trent and Mersey Canal was constructed between 1766 and 1777.
