Description
The School House and Old School Building, attached on the left-hand side, was built in 1860 and designed by architect Ewan Christian. The School House is constructed of red brick with stone dressings and consists of two storeys, forming an L-shape. The front features a projecting gabled bay with a two-light mullion window in a stone surround, and a stone canted bay window on the ground floor topped with a stone pentice roof. The right-hand wing has a small projecting gable, a window in a stone surround, and a pointed arched doorway with a hood mould. This doorway has a tiled pentice hood supported by brackets and a ledged door with decorative iron strap hinges. Above the doorway is a stone panel featuring a glazed quatrefoil. The building has quoins at all angles, stone-coped gables, and brick stacks with altered caps, all covered with tiles.
The Old School Building, attached on the left, dates from 1841 and shares a similar character. It has a stone-coped gable facing the road, featuring an almond-shaped panel with the arms of Charlotte Sparrow, formerly of Bishton Hall. This building includes a three-light mullion transom window with a pointed arched head and hood mould, as well as a star-shaped brick stack. It is currently used as a store.
