194-204, BRIXTON ROAD SW9

Nos 194 to 204 on Brixton Road, dating from the early to mid-19th century, are three large pairs of buildings, each three storeys high with an attic and basement. They typically feature two windows, except for No 194, which is three windows wide and has its entrance in the main block. No 196 also has its entrance in the main block. The buildings are constructed of stock brick with a rusticated stucco basement and ground floor, topped with a cornice and blocking course. They have a tall mansard roof with some altered dormers. The sash windows, which include glazing bars, are found throughout, except on the first floor of Nos 198 to 204, where there are long casements with ornamental cast iron bars. All windows are framed with moulded architraves, and a frieze and cornice have been added on the first floor. Nos 198 to 204 feature tripartite ground floor windows without architraves but with console bracketed cornices. Nos 194 and 196 have eight steps leading to a four-panel door with a cornice head and fanlight, with No 194 having a patterned fanlight and a prostyle Ionic porch. The other buildings have six steps leading to recessed four-panel doors under console bracketed cornices. Upper floors have been added over the entrance links. The buildings are noted for their group value.
