Description
St Bede's Roman Catholic Primary School is a substantial mid-19th century villa built by Thomas Cubitt. The building has three storeys and a basement, featuring three windows. It has a low-pitched hipped roof covered with slate, which is adorned with deep modillioned eaves above a moulded cornice. The exterior is finished in stucco, with first floor and cill strings, and ground floor vermiculate quoins. The sash windows, which have moulded architraves and glazing bars (missing on the ground floor), are complemented by a long casement window on the first floor that opens to a balustraded balcony. This balcony is situated above a prostyle Doric porch, which has filled sides and a door set in a glazed front between square columns. The first floor windows are topped with cornices and segmental pediments, while the ground floor windows feature cornices and projecting cills supported by console brackets. The rear elevation mirrors the front but includes a cast iron balcony along the ground floor on the left and a one-storey and basement canted bay on the right, which has a dentil cornice and a balustraded parapet.
