Description

Brashier's Cottage is a house that dates back to around the 1820s, although it may have earlier origins. It is marked on the tithe map of 1841 and has been extended at the rear in the late 19th and 20th centuries. The cottage features painted brick and weatherboarding on the rear section, with a pyramidal slate roof on the main house and stacks on the east elevation. It has a modest L-shaped plan, with two storeys and three rooms on each floor arranged around a stairwell located directly behind the front door.

The exterior is quite simple, showcasing a sixteen-pane window on the first floor, a blind window next to it, and an early Victorian sash window on the ground floor. The entrance includes a four-panelled door with a central letterbox and doorknob, along with a plain toplight.

The most notable aspect of Brashier's Cottage is its largely unaltered interior, which features high-quality detailing from the 1820s. The staircase includes a cast-iron newel and a fine curved mahogany balustrade, while the vestibule and inner stairhall are fully panelled up to the top of the house, with cornice brackets marking their junction. A cupboard is located at the top of the stairs, and the ceiling is moulded. The panelling is also present in the adjoining kitchen and bedroom above. The living room boasts thick banded ceiling mouldings and architraves, with similar designs in the bedrooms above, which still have their original fireplaces. Although the rear extensions added in the late 19th century and rebuilt in the late 20th century are not of special interest, the cottage is included for the fine quality of its interiors and their exceptional state of preservation and completeness.
