Description
The Church Hall at the rear of Brixton United Reformed Church is a former school room for the Congregational church, which has since been demolished. Built in 1878 by Rowland Plumbe, as noted on the foundation stone, the hall is constructed of stock brick with red brick bands and dressings, topped with slate roofs and a tiled gablet on the main range. The building has a T-plan layout, featuring a double-height hall with a gallery that is accessed via a staircase in the crosswing, which also contains smaller rooms on two floors.
The exterior showcases a five-bay main range, with each bay having three high-level windows set between buttresses and framed by gauged brick heads, creating an arcade effect. The gallery is illuminated by similar windows positioned slightly higher, with additional windows below. On the north side, the staircase is lit by stepped windows and paired lancets beneath a roundel. The red brick eaves and bands add to the structure's character. The lower floor is mostly blind, except for the west end, but the south side now features two double doors. The east end gable includes a central roundel, while the crosswing has single lancets.
Inside, the hall retains a fine timber roof supported by king posts and hammerbeams, all of which end in decorative finials. The timber gallery front is accessed by a stone staircase with a cast-iron balustrade. The building also preserves arched timber doors within.
