Description

This is a circa 1800 terrace of houses, numbered 137 to 147, on Kennington Lane. The terrace is stepped, with each house being three storeys high and having a basement level. Originally, each house had two windows. The exterior is stock brick, topped with a stone-coped parapet. The two outer houses have been largely rebuilt. The original window arches were made of red brick and gauged, but are now either stuccoed or have replacement stone lintels in the outer houses. Most windows are sash windows, and many retain glazing bars. The doors are of six panels. Numbers 139, 141, and 143 feature doorways with fluted heads and patterned radial fanlights in vermiculate rustication. Number 137 has an oblong fanlight and a plain surround. Number 145 has a shallow rounded bow, which may have originally been a shop front, and an altered door. Number 147 has a large shop front from the mid-19th century, featuring composite pilasters, an entablature with a dentil cornice, panelled stallrisers, and original glazing. The two outer houses are included in the listing primarily for their contribution to the group value of the terrace.
