Description

This is a substantial, symmetrical terrace of early 19th century houses, numbered 231 to 245 Kennington Lane. The terrace comprises 19 houses, each originally with three storeys, an attic, and a basement, and featuring three windows each. The end houses and two central houses are taller and slightly project forward. The central pair of houses are wider than their neighbours. The construction is primarily stock brick, with a stuccoed basement, a first-floor cill band, and a mutuled cornice. A stone-coped parapet runs along the roofline, although the central pair of houses do not have a cornice. The roofs are slated mansards, with modern dormers. Some rebuilding occurred after the Second World War. The windows are sash windows with glazing bars, the long windows on the ground floor having patterned cast iron guards in the centre. The window arches are shaped, with flat brick arches; they are round-arched within recesses in the central and outer houses, featuring stuccoed impost bands. Access to the front doors, each consisting of four fielded panels and two beaded panels with fanlights (some patterned), is provided by a flight of approximately seven steps. The front doors are set within round-arched recesses, with the central doors having side-light panels and a wider fanlight.
