Description

Imperial Court is a large, four-story building dating from 1835-6, originally designed by H and E Rose as a school for the Licensed Victuallers' Company. It now serves as the NAAFI headquarters. The building is composed of five three-window sections, with the central and end sections projecting. It is constructed of stock brick with stone and stucco dressings in a classical style. The ground and first floors have rusticated podia in the central and end sections, forming voussoirs to round-arched openings. A tetrastyle composite portico with a pedimented gable sits centrally above a tall, triple window with its own cornice and pediment. Gauged flat brick arches frame sash windows with glazing bars, and moulded architraves feature at the ends of the building. The intermediate sections have a mezzanine floor with modern windows inserted. A wide flight of steps leads to three round-arched entrances in the centre of the building.
