Description
West Hampstead Primary School, originally known as Beckford Primary School, is a board school built between 1885 and 1886, with some alterations made in 1891. Designed by T.J. Bailey for the School Board of London, the building features yellow stock brick with red brick dressings and tiled roofs, topped with tall slab chimney-stacks that rise from the party walls. The structure has an asymmetrical design on a south sloping site and comprises four and three storeys.
The two left-hand bays are identical, each with groups of three upper floor windows that have glazing bars. There is a cornice at the third-floor sill level, and the central third-floor windows have segmental-arched heads that extend into inswept pediments, which are surmounted by small stone pediments. The recessed central bay contains small paired sash windows. The two right-hand bays have similar windows to the left but end in large Flemish gables; the left gable features an oculus and a slab chimney-stack with a bellcote, while the right gable has a plaque.
The school also has subsidiary features, including an attached pedimented stone infants' gateway dated 1886 and railings adorned with fleur-de-lys finials. The interior has not been inspected.
