Description
Hackney Free and Parochial School is a primary school building, originally known as the Wilton Road Board School, constructed in 1886 by architect T.J. Bailey for the School Board for London. The building is made of yellow stock brick with red brick edging, and some areas feature roughcast plaster on the upper storey. It has a steeply pitched tiled roof with deep eaves and four paired stacks.
The principal elevation faces Wilton Way and consists of a three-storey block with six bays. The design is symmetrical, with the outer bays recessed and the adjacent bays slightly projecting from the central two-bay section. Each bay features a tall attic-storey window that breaks through the roofline, distinguished by bracketed brick pediments, ornamental brick bases, and shell motifs in the gablets. These windows are flanked by pairs of smaller windows with white-painted sashes and flat heads. The ground and first floors have large, round-headed windows.
The side elevations each have three bays, with two tall windows at attic storey level set in ornamental surrounds. The rear elevation is similar to the front but features a wide, three-storey canted bay in the central portion for the school halls, topped with its own steeply pitched roof with a gablet. The interior has not been inspected. Only the main school building is of special interest.
