Description

‘Untitled [Listening]’ is a granite and bronze sculpture created by Antony Gormley between 1983 and 1984, located near the Brassey Road entrance to Maygrove Peace Park. The sculpture stands 213 centimeters tall and features a life-size nude male figure seated on a glacial granite boulder. The figure's left hand is cupped behind the ear in a gesture of listening, conveying a sense of both sympathy and vigilance. The body is rendered without detail, highlighting a sense of universality rather than individuality; for instance, the ear is depicted in a schematic manner with a small hole drilled at its center. The sculpture is made from welded sections, with the linear weld marks clearly visible. The boulder is placed on a slightly domed circular area of granite setts.
