Description
The tomb of Sir Banister Fletcher and his family is located in Hampstead Cemetery and dates from around 1899. It was designed by Sir Banister Flight Fletcher, the son of the deceased. The memorial features a baldacchino design made of stone, with a rectangular plan and steps that include sculptured figures of seated women dressed in flowing Classical attire at the corners. These figures support an inscribed plinth that is topped by a Classical canopy consisting of four Ionic columns, which hold up an entablature with a projecting cornice inscribed with the name "Banister Fletcher." The canopy was originally crowned by an ornate flaming urn. Beneath the canopy, there is an inscribed column adorned with coats of arms, with the top of the column set between volutes. Sir Banister Fletcher was an architect and architectural historian, known for his work "A History of Architecture on the Comparative Method." Sir Banister Flight Fletcher is also buried at this site.
