Description
The Tomb of Sir William Randal Cremer in Hampstead Cemetery is an obelisk dating from around 1908, made of granite. It stands on a rectangular moulded base, featuring a bottom panel with a sculptured relief of a willow bough and a sword. The main shaft has inset inscribed panels, and the capital displays a high relief sculptured torch on each face, set within a laurel wreath and flanked by foliar volutes. It is topped with an ovolo cornice and a pyramidal cap.
Sir William Randal Cremer began his career as a carpenter and became a notable trade unionist and pacifist. He served as the Secretary of the International Arbitration League for 37 years and was opposed to class warfare, resigning when the committee supported revolution. He was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 1903.
