Description
The Tomb of Joseph Maas in Hampstead Cemetery is a Grade II listed structure dating from around 1886. It features a rectangular stone plinth with a stepped base and an inset inscribed panel. Atop the plinth is a sculptured figure of a grieving female, dressed in Classical robes, who leans on her right arm, supporting her head on a draped pile of three books. The pedestal includes a relief portrait medallion of the deceased, topped with a Classical wreath. Joseph Maas was an opera singer trained in Milan and served as the principal tenor at Her Majesty's Theatre. His tomb is one of the earlier monuments in the cemetery.
