Description
The tomb of Marthe Goscombe John and Sir William Goscombe John is located in Hampstead Cemetery and dates from around 1923. It was created by Sir William Goscombe John, a Welsh sculptor who studied under Rodin in Paris during the 1890s. The tomb features a rectangular stone kerbed plot with crazy paved infill. Inscribed steps lead up to a sculptured bronze female figure, depicted in flowing robes with her head covered by an enveloping shawl. She is shown moving away from the viewer, looking back with her right arm raised to her lips. The backdrop consists of a square-headed headstone with battered sides and a carved segmental cornice adorned with anthemion motifs.
