Description

The Hampstead Cemetery Mortuary Chapels, built between 1875 and 1876 by Charles Bell, consist of linked Church of England (south) and Nonconformist (north) chapels. Constructed from random Kentish rag rubble with Bath stone dressings and featuring slate roofs, the chapels exhibit a symmetrical design in the Decorated Gothic style. They have apsidal ends and consist of four bays, connected by a porte-cochere. The chapels are accessed from this porte-cochere, which is a rectangular tower with buttressed angles and a pointed archway. Above the archway, there is blind arcading and a roundel in the gables, topped by an octagonal belfry under arcading and a spire. The east ends of the chapels feature traceried six-light pointed windows flanked by angle buttresses with tall finials, while the apsidal west ends have three gabled bays, each with two-light traceried windows separated by buttresses. The porte-cochere is linked to the chapels by three-bay arcaded porticoes.

Inside, each chapel has an arched brace roof supported by foliated corbels, and large chancel arches with well-carved demi-angels leading into the apses. The Church of England chapel contains three notable stained glass windows designed by J Dudley Forsyth of Hampstead and is now inter-denominational, while the Nonconformist chapel is currently used as a store.
