Description
New End Primary School is a primary school built around 1906 by TJ Bailey and the London County Council Architect's Department, Schools branch. It features red brick construction with a front made of yellow brick, accented by red brick pilasters and dressings. The roof is gabled and covered with old tiles, topped with stone-capped brick stacks, and the building is designed in the Edwardian Baroque style.
The exterior consists of four double-height stories with a central block that has four windows, flanked by projecting wings that rise to eight stories and include attics with two-bay facades. The central block has two semicircular arched entries, each featuring triple keystones and separated by a pilaster topped with a scrolled pediment above a stone plaque. Brick pilasters on the central block are adorned with stone triglyph friezes extending from the second floor to a segmental-arched stone frieze beneath a moulded stone cornice, culminating in a tall brick parapet. The windows are characterized by red brick flat arches over transom and mullion windows with small panes.
The projecting wings contain square-headed doorways framed by wide stone architraves and topped with bracketed flat hoods. The paired four-pane sashes are set between brick pilasters with stone triglyph capitals, which support semicircular arches adorned with Flemish gables featuring carved stone coping and carved stone oeil-de-boeuf windows. The rear elevation is made of red brick and showcases grouped windows with small panes in the center, with pediments on the top floor. The projecting wings include brick pilasters with stone triglyph capitals at the corners, supporting ashlar piers with shaped cornices that flank large segmental-arched Ipswich windows. These windows are detailed with tall alternating red brick and stone voussoirs and carved Baroque-style keystones, and the hipped roofs are fitted with segmental dormers and tall finials. The interior has not been inspected.
