Description

The building comprises an infirmary block and linking corridors, originally part of the New End Hospital, which began as the Hampstead parish workhouse. Construction took place between 1869 and 1871, with an extension in 1878, all designed by John Giles of Messrs Giles & Bevan. The building was converted for residential use between 1996 and 1998, with John Thompson Associates as architects. It is built of yellow stock brick with brick bands at the floor levels and has a hipped, low-pitched slated roof. The building is four storeys high with a basement, forming a long, single-depth range with a tower attached to the south end and linking corridors to the north. The windows are recessed sash windows with segmental brick arches and stuccoed keystones. The tower has a cast-iron balcony to the top floor. The linking corridors are constructed on a cast-iron frame of Tuscan columns, with each floor having a separate timber construction and continuously glazed with six-pane sliding sashes.

The interiors are plain and functional.

The infirmary was built following the Metropolitan Poor Act of 1867, which addressed concerns about the condition of workhouses, highlighted in The Lancet in July 1865. A medical officer's report in July 1868 revealed inadequate accommodation, leading to immediate improvements. The infirmary included a separation ward and a lying-in ward, influenced by Florence Nightingale's reforms in nursing and hospital design, featuring high, light wards designed to allow cross-ventilation. The building is part of a linked group that also includes the former Workhouse Block, the Circular Ward & attached Water Tower, and the Boilerhouse Chimney. It possesses exceptional townscape value.
