Description
Numbers 7-19 on Argyle Street is a terrace of seven houses, built around 1833-1839, which are now mostly small hotels. The buildings are constructed of yellow stock brick. Number 7 features a stucco ground floor, while Number 9 has a pebble dash rendered ground floor. Numbers 13-19 have painted stucco ground floors, with Number 15 displaying a rusticated finish. The first floor has plain stucco sill bands, and Numbers 13-19 are topped with slate mansard roofs that include dormers. The terrace is three storeys high, with attics and basements for Numbers 13-19, and each house has two windows. The ground floor openings are round-arched, and the doorways for Numbers 7-11 are framed by pilaster-jambs that support cornice-heads, featuring fanlights and panelled doors. The doorways for Numbers 13-19 are 20th-century reproductions with glazed doors. The windows have gauged brick flat arches above recessed sashes, and the first floor windows are set in shallow, round-arched recesses with cast-iron balconies. The buildings have parapets. The interiors have not been inspected. The terrace is complemented by attached cast-iron railings with tasselled spearhead finials leading to the areas.
