Description

One Oak is a detached house located on Redington Road, built in 1889 by architect Arthur H Mackmurdo for Mrs Geddes. The house was extended in 1927 by Maxwell Ayrton for Sir E Owen Williams, an engineer. It features yellow brick with red brick dressings on the ground floor and a tiled mansard roof. The design is symmetrical, except for a recessed entrance bay on the right side.

The house has two storeys and six windows. The central entrance consists of a panelled door with an overlight above it. The windows are white-painted sashes with gauged red brick flat arches and blind boxes. There is a subsidiary entrance to the right, which has a gauged brick head and a part-glazed door with margin patterning. A deep white-painted entablature runs along the first floor, adorned with an enriched frieze and cornice, supporting six 2-light dormers that oversail the first floor.

Although the interior has not been inspected, it is noted to retain many of Mackmurdo's stylised and richly moulded doorways, skirting boards, cornices, and fireplaces. A separate studio to the east of the house was built for Owen Williams but has since been altered.

Historically, One Oak is recognized as a rare example of Arthur H Mackmurdo's work, designed in an innovative style for its time. It was also the home of the sculptor Sir Hamo Thornycroft and the celebrated civil engineer Sir Owen Williams.
