Description
Garvald House, located in Newmill, Elgin, was built in 1868 by H M S Mackay. This two-storey house features an asymmetrical design and is harled with stone margins and band courses. It has a T-plan layout with a rear wing. The entrance is on the long southern arm of the T, featuring a central door set in a chamfered architrave. To the right, there is a projecting two-storey bay with chamfered angles that are corbelled to a square at the parapet, while a canted ground floor window is situated to the left. The gable end of the cross wing also has a two-storey canted bay. The windows are multi-pane glazed, and the house has corniced end stacks and a slate roof.
The rear wing includes a drum tower topped with a conical roof covered in fish-slate. The entrance is marked by square ashlar gatepiers with pyramidal caps and banded ball finials, accompanied by cast-iron gates. The surrounding wall is built of rubble with a dressed stone coping. Additionally, there is a pedestrian gateway in the wall featuring re-used 17th century flat-headed bolection moulded doorpiece frames.
