Description

Beacons is a house built between 1902 and 1903 by A.H. Mackmurdo. It is constructed of red brick with some rough rendering and has red plain tiled roofs. The house features three attached diagonal shaft red brick chimney stacks that are visible from the south face. The design has an asymmetric plan, with the main range being two storeys high and gabled two-storey bays on both the left and right sides. Between these bays is a first-floor red tiled porch. There are two-storey ranges to the left and right of the bays, a two-storey and attic section with a gabled dormer and sun porch on the far right, and a flat-roofed single-storey extension on the far left, which includes patio doors.

The first floor has a window arrangement of 2:1:2:1:2:2, including an angle oriel on the fifth range, which has a roof hipped to the right with a gablet. Each ground floor range has one window, except for the two right ranges. The windows are mainly square leaded casements with two or three lights, some of which are mullioned or have both mullions and transoms, and feature moulded surrounds. There is a small paned bay on the left range and a half-glazed door.

A large square observation tower rises from the roof ridge above the door. This tower has a base of red brick and hanging tiles, with paired windows on each face, a red tiled pyramidal roof, moulded eaves cornice, and a ball finial. The north face of the house includes a large covered carriageway leading to the doorway, supported by fluted Ionic pilasters.

Beacons has group value with the former gardener's cottage, Beacons Cottage, which was also designed by Mackmurdo in 1903.
