Description

The Great Braxted and Wickham Bishops War Memorial is a tall hexagonal stone pillar topped with an orb and an incised cross. It stands on a three-step hexagonal plinth, with the top two steps featuring inscriptions in black lettering. The left upper step honors the men of Great Braxted who gave their lives for King and Country, followed by a list of names on the lower step. The upper inscription on the top step commemorates Charles Oscar Wilson, a lieutenant in the 5th Battalion Essex Regiment, who was killed in action before Gaza, Palestine, on the evening of March 26th, 1917, at the age of 23. The lower inscription quotes from the Bible: "Greater love hath no man than this, that a man lay down his life for his friends" (John 15:13). The right front upper step honors the men of Wickham Bishops who gave their lives for King and Country, also followed by a list of names below. The right back upper step remembers the men who gave their lives in the war of 1939-1945, with names listed on the lower step.
