Description

The Hazlemere War Memorial is located outside Holy Trinity Church, on the south side of Amersham Road. It is loosely based on Sir Reginald Blomfield’s Cross of Sacrifice and features a plain Latin cross made of Portland stone, standing approximately 4 meters high. The cross has an octagonal shape, and its arms are topped with pyramidal bosses. The moulded foot of the cross shaft rests on an octagonal pedestal, which is set on a four-stepped base.

All inscriptions on the memorial are incised and painted black. The main dedication is found on the front face of the steps, stating: "GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN/ THAN THIS THAT A MAN LAY DOWN HIS LIFE FOR HIS FRIENDS/ SACRED/ TO THE GLORIOUS MEMORY OF THE/ MEN OF HAZLEMERE & DISTRICT/ WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR."

The names of those who fell in the First World War are inscribed on three faces of the pedestal, listed alphabetically by surname, preceded by first names or initials. Two other faces display the inscription "AND IN THE WAR/ OF 1939-1945," along with the names of those who fell in the Second World War, also listed by surname with first names or initials. An additional inscription reads "IN MEMORY OF/ THE FALLEN/ SINCE 1945," with the name of a fallen soldier from Afghanistan in 2006 on the south-west face.
