Description
Marsworth War Memorial is located in the north-east of the churchyard of the Church of All Saints, which is a Grade II*-listed building, and is prominently situated in the village. The memorial is a tall cross made of Portland stone, featuring an octagonal shaft and arms. The cross head has square terminals, and the shaft ends in a moulded foot that rests on a square plinth. This plinth is set upon a three-stepped base. Each side of the plinth has recessed panels with inscriptions.
On the north face, the inscription reads: “GREATER LOVE HATH/ NO MAN THAN THIS,/ THAT A MAN LAY/ DOWN HIS LIFE/ FOR HIS FRIENDS.” The east face lists 11 names. The south face commemorates: IN/ GRATEFUL MEMORY/ OF/ THE MEN OF THIS/ VILLAGE WHO FELL IN/ THE GREAT WAR OF/ 1914 – 1918. The west face notes the years 1939 – 1945 and includes 3 names.
