Description

The Red Lion is a public house that underwent remodelling in the early to mid-19th century, incorporating elements from earlier buildings. The main range features some timber-framing with whitewashed brick infill at the rear, while the lower range to the right includes the upper part of a cruck truss between bays. The front of the main range is faced in red brick, topped with an old tile roof and a rendered chimney on the left. The building is two storeys tall with a cellar and consists of three bays. The left bay has three-light wooden casements on the first floor and mezzanine, along with a board door featuring a cambered head leading to the cellar. The right bay contains a four-light casement with a segmental head on the ground floor and a 20th-century three-light metal casement above. The centre bay has a 20th-century two-light wooden casement on the first floor and a lean-to porch projection with a two-light casement and door. The lower range to the right is constructed of paler brick with dentil eaves, a thatched roof with a tiled lower pitch, and flanking brick chimneys, one of which is a thin brick that has been rebuilt. This range is also two storeys and has two bays, featuring barred horizontal sliding sashes and two doorways at the centre, with the left doorway blocked and the right featuring a 20th-century door. The ground floor openings have segmental heads. Inside the main range, there is a chamfered spine beam with one end stopped in the centre bay, and to the left, a mezzanine room with slight framing in the walls and an arched corner cupboard with shaped shelves.
