Description

Hooton, Childer Thornton and Little Sutton War Memorial is located at Hooton Lodge, which serves as an entrance to Hooton Hall on Chester Road, positioned in front of the 18th century Hooton Lodge buildings, screen wall, and gates, all of which are listed at Grade II. It is situated immediately to the south-east of St Paul’s Church, which is also listed at Grade II. The memorial, approximately 5 meters tall, is made of Portland stone and is based on Sir Reginald Blomfield’s Cross of Sacrifice.

The memorial features a Latin cross with an octagonal shape, rising from an octagonal plinth that sits on a two-stepped octagonal base. A reversed sword is carved in low relief on the front face of the cross.

The main dedicatory inscription on the front face of the plinth reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THE MEN FROM HOOTON, CHILDER THORNTON & LITTLE SUTTON WHO DIED FOR THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR OF 1914-1919 + THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE." The other seven faces of the plinth are inscribed with the names of those commemorated from the First and Second World Wars.

Additionally, the west face of the cross shaft foot is inscribed with the names and details of two individuals: "NORTHERN IRELAND TROOPER 17/21ST LANCERS ADRIAN KENEALY 14.9.1973 CAPT. SEAN DOLAN 30.6.2007."
