Description
White Lodge is a gate lodge built in 1850 for Thornton Lodge. It features white coursed smooth-rendered walls and steep cruciform roofs covered with shaped purple slating, complete with ridge tiles and ornate timber finials. The lodge has highly decorative carved open-work barge boards and a central chimney that has a deeply moulded plinth and cap with octagonal flues. The porch is made of shaped open-work painted timber and includes the date '1850'. There is a replacement door and yellow sandstone mullioned windows with ogee lights located in the west and east gables, symmetrically placed on either side of the south porch. The north gable window has tracery that forms quatrefoiled diamonds. There is also an extension to the east, which is partly modern. This building is a fine example of an early Victorian lodge ornee.
