Description
The Axbridge War Memorial is a First World War memorial, likely built in the early 1920s, with an additional inscription added after the Second World War. It is made from roughly-hewn granite and is prominently located next to the stepped approach to the Church of St John the Baptist, which is a Grade I listed building.
The memorial features a Celtic cross atop a tapering shaft and is set on a plinth consisting of three steps. The front (south) face displays three commemorative inscriptions. The upper step has black painted lettering that reads: "TO THE GLORY OF GOD AND IN GRATEFUL MEMORY OF THE AXBRIDGE MEN WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918." The central step lists the names of the servicemen, while the lower step states: "THEY DIED FOR YOU 'GREATER LOVE HATH NO MAN THAN THIS.' AND THE WORLD WAR 1939-1945. NAMES." The entire structure is supported by a square stone base.
