Description

Lloyds Bank House is a late 18th-century house and bank offices situated on the north side of The Square in Axbridge. The building is rendered with end pilasters, plain bands at the first and second floor levels, a moulded cornice, and a parapet with plain coping. It has hipped roofs covered with pantiles and slate, and three rendered and brick stacks. The overall plan is L-shaped.

The main three-storey, two-bay front has nine and twelve-pane sash windows; the bottom sashes of the ground-floor windows have had their glazing bars removed. The right-hand entrance elevation is plainer, with sash windows retaining their glazing bars. A late 19th-century paired sash window is located to the right of the ground floor, with smaller sash windows above on the first and second floors, each having a semi-circular head and radiating glazing bars. A central door opening is accessed via a six-panelled door, the top two panels being glazed, set within a stone doorcase. The doorcase features an open triangular pediment supported by two engaged Roman Doric columns, each with a small square section of entablature. The pediment frames an arched fanlight with radiating glazing bars. A two-storey, two-bay wing projects at right angles to the right, featuring eight-light sash windows with marginal lights. Low spearhead railings enclose the length of the public frontage along The Square.
