Description
The Old Angel is an inn that has been converted into a house, dating from around 1550, with a refronting in the late 17th century and further alterations in the early 19th century. The building is timber framed and rendered, featuring a double Roman tile roof. It has three storeys and an attic, with two bays.
On the second floor, there is a central canted bay with exposed studwork beneath a tile pent roof, and a three-light casement window, with each light having a pointed arch head and glazed spandrels. The first floor has two canted bays with exposed studwork, featuring 17th-century five-light mullioned and transomed windows, and a tiled pent roof with a fascia board extending over these bays. Between the bays, there is a signboard under a triangular pediment.
The ground floor is slightly set forward under the first floor bays, with two flush-mounted 16-pane sash windows and a central 20th-century plank door, also with a tiled pent roof above. To the right, there is a two-storey wing set back, which has a broad door opening to the ground floor with double plank doors. There is evidence of jettying on the first floor of the right return of the main block. Inside, there is a fine fireplace in the right room of the first floor, dated 1672, along with exposed ceiling beams.
