Description

Nos 86 (part) and 88 on High Street is a shop with offices above, dating from the 18th century, with alterations from the 19th and 20th centuries. The building has three storeys and two windows, constructed from red and brown brick. The upper floor was added in the early 19th century, featuring red brick with a string course at the second floor and a parapet. The roof is made of concrete with plain tiles. The early 19th-century windows have flat arches made of gauged brick, while the large-pane sashes are 20th-century replacements. The entrance door, which is from the 20th century, is set within an 18th-century surround that includes fluted flat pilasters, a head with a moulded cornice, sunk panelled reveals, and an oblong fanlight. There are limestone steps leading to the entrance. The shopfront, which projects, is made of wood and plate glass and dates from the 20th century. Inside, there is a notable mid-18th-century staircase on the first floor, featuring moulded handrails, turned balusters, and newels with drop finials. At the rear, there is a gabled two-storey wing from the 18th century, built of painted brick, with plain tiles and small-pane sash windows facing into the adjacent carriageway entrance to the left.
