Description

The Wellington Diner, along with D's Fabrics, Internation Progressive Travel, and Jocks, is a row of four shops that was formerly the Fox and Goose Inn. It dates from the mid-18th century and has undergone alterations in the 19th century. The building is two storeys high with attics and features seven windows. It is constructed of red brick, which is partly rendered and painted in the 19th century, with false mortar joints. The roof is double-piled and covered with plain tiles, featuring a coved wooden soffit from the 18th century and flat-roofed dormers added in the 19th century. There are axial chimneys from the 18th century.

On the first floor, there are early 19th-century sash windows with flat arches made of gauged brick, some of which have small-pane sashes. The building also includes three early 19th-century splayed oriel windows with flat roofs and sliding sashes, two of which have small panes. The Wellington Diner has a late 19th-century shop front with pilasters, while the other shop fronts are from the mid-20th century. Inside, there is a mid-18th-century staircase with balustrading at the upper level that features turned heavy balusters alternating with slats, and at the lower level, a lighter form of balustrading in the Chinese Chippendale style. The building is included for its group value.
