Description

The premises occupied by Scarffs (Deep Freeze), Castle House, and the adjoining shop premises is a 16th-century timber-framed and plastered building that was formerly known as the Boar and Griffon Inn. A will from 1640 indicates that it belonged to Gabriel Golding. The building transitioned to business use in the early 18th century. It features a main block with two separate additions at the south-west end, standing two stories tall with attics. The main block was refronted in the 18th century, showcasing a parapet and a paired modillion cornice. It has a five-window range with double-hung sashes that include glazing bars, all set in cased frames. The entrance features a six-panel door topped by a rectangular fanlight, framed by a wooden doorcase with slender half-columns and a cornice. There is a 20th-century shop front at the north-east end. The roof is tiled and includes one segmental-headed dormer. The adjoining addition on the south-west end is also two stories high with a two-window range and 20th-century casements. The second extension, likely a stable block, includes a carriage entrance at the south-west end and features two stories and attics. Its windows have fixed lights with glazing bars, and the ground floor has a 20th-century shop front. The roof is tiled and has two tall gabled dormers. This building is part of a group of listed buildings in Well Lane and surrounding streets.
