Description
The Post Office and Village Shop is a 16th century timber-framed building located on the south side of High Street in Chiddingstone. It has two storeys and an attic, featuring five irregularly placed windows. The building is topped with a high-pitched tiled roof that includes a compound ridge stack.
On the left side, there is a way into the yard with a first floor that oversails and is supported by timber joints. A small leaded casement window is present here. In the center, the shop front has been restored and features a brick base, a double glazed door, and square paned windows on either side, all with mullions and transoms. Above the shop front and door, there is a restored architrave moulding. The first floor showcases vertical half-timbering with plaster infilling and two small leaded lights.
To the right, there are three gable ends, with the center gable end projecting and supported by timber posts that create a covered porch. The two side gable ends have attic windows, and there is a square bay projection that rises two storeys, featuring mullioned windows and an oversailing gable end supported by a bracket on the left. An octagonal bay window is located to the right of the door, complete with mullions and transoms, and it also supports an oversailing first floor. Additionally, there is a projecting oriel window on the first floor, which has mullions and transoms and supports an oversailing gable end with brackets. All three gable ends are adorned with moulded eave boards and pendants. The front door, which has a pointed arch, is accessed by three stone steps, and there is a cobbled pavement in front of the building.
The Post Office and Village Shop is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 4 (consecutive), No 6, The Castle Inn, and the gate to Chiddingstone Castle.
