Description

No 4 High Street is a building dated 1697, though it likely conceals an older timber-framed structure. It has two storeys and three dormers, featuring a symmetrical front with a central doorway set in a moulded frame and five sets of diamond-paned casement windows. The front door is accessed by four steps. The building has a wide brick plinth and is rendered above, with moulded eaves and no gutter. The roof is covered with ridge tiles. There is incised ornamentation in the plaster around the first-floor windows and at the corners and edges of the rendering. Four incised medallions are located between the first-floor windows and in the gable ends of the dormers. The date "1697" is incised in the plaster rendering above the doorway. Additionally, there is a small connecting link between No 4 and the Village shop, which is a single-storey structure with a tile roof. Cobblestones in front create continuous roadside verges. Nos 1 to 4 (consecutive), No 6, The Castle Inn, and the gate to Chiddingstone Castle form a group.
