Description

The Post Office and house at 1 High Street and 41 Nethergate Street is a building dating from the late 15th or early 16th century. It features a timber-framed and plastered structure with a crosswing at the south end and a return front at No 41 Nethergate Street. The building has undergone significant alterations, particularly in the early 19th century, when it was refronted and now displays a roughcast finish with a parapet on the east front.

It stands two storeys high with attics, showcasing a four-window range on the east front and a two-window range on the south front. The windows are double-hung sashes with glazing bars, set in flush cased frames. Notably, one of the first-storey windows on the east front retains the carved sill of a former oriel window, which is adorned with figures and a shield.

No 41 Nethergate Street features two early 19th-century shop fronts. The shop front on the south side has fluted pilasters with a cornice, flanked by two doorways, one of which contains a six-panel door with reeded pilasters and a cornice hood supported by paired brackets. The other shop front is a fine example of its type, featuring a corner six-panel double door with a rectangular fanlight, small paned shop windows with thin section glazing bars, narrow pilasters, and a continuous fascia cornice. The roofs are tiled and include one segmental headed dormer on the east front.

The building is part of a group that includes Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive), Nos 28, 29, and 31, all the listed buildings in Well Lane, Stone Hall, and Nos 36 to 40 (consecutive) Nethergate Street.
