Description
The Pharmacy is a 16th-century timber-framed and plastered house that was altered in the early 19th century when it was refaced in painted brick, featuring a parapet and a stucco cornice. The building has two storeys and attics, with a three-window range of double-hung sashes that have glazing bars, set in plain reveals and topped with stuccoed flat arches. The ground floor includes a 19th-century shop front and a carriage entrance adorned with pilasters, a frieze, and a cornice. At the rear, there is a gabled wing, and a white brick wing with a slate roof was added in 1840. The roof is tiled and has one segmental-headed dormer. Inside, there is a carved ceiling beam with running leaf ornamentation, and the roof features a plain crown post. The Pharmacy is part of a group of listed buildings in Well Lane, which includes Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive) and No 31 Church Street, as well as all the listed buildings in Market Hill, Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive) Malting Lane, Stone Hall, and Nos 36 to 40 (consecutive) Nethergate Street, and all the listed buildings in Station Road.
