Description
This building, known as the premises occupied by Charles Boardman and Son, Saddlers Cottage, and the premises occupied by P Carrington, is a primarily 17th-century timber-framed and plastered house with an H-shaped plan. It features a central hall block that incorporates an older structure, likely from the 16th century, with crosswings at both the east and west ends. The building has two storeys and a three-window range, showcasing 18th-century double-hung sash windows with glazing bars set in cased frames. The crosswings have 20th-century shop fronts on the ground floor. Saddlers Cottage includes a four-panel door adorned with pilasters and a small cornice. The roof is tiled, and there is a large, rebuilt red brick chimney stack with square shafts. This building is located on part of the site of the medieval Moot Hall. It is part of a group of listed buildings in Well Lane, which includes Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive) and No 31 Church Street, as well as all the listed buildings in Market Hill, Nos 1 to 8 (consecutive) Malting Lane, Stone Hall, and Nos 36 to 40 (consecutive) Nethergate Street, and all the listed buildings in Station Road.
