Description
Hutchinson Opticians and Sugar and Spice is a pair of shops with offices above, originally a house, dating from the 18th century with a possible 17th-century core. The building has a three-cell lobby-entrance plan and stands two storeys tall with attics. It is constructed of painted brick and features a plaintiled roof with segmental-headed dormers and an axial chimney made of gault brick. The first floor has sash windows with flat arches of painted gauged brick and small-pane sashes. The shop fronts were added around 1980. A slightly set-forward entrance bay is topped with a dentilled wooden pediment, and the 18th-century doorway has an enriched pediment on fluted pilasters. The entrance door from the 19th century has four panels. At the rear, there is a small central staircase wing and a one-storey timber-framed service wing.
