Description
The stable outbuilding, located 20 meters west of Barley House Farmhouse, dates back to around 1600. It was likely constructed as a pair of stables with lofts above and consists of four bays. The structure is timber-framed and weatherboarded, originally featuring plaster with wattle-and-daub infill. It has a corrugated iron roof that was once thatched. The framing is un-moulded, with arch-windbraced studwork and a windbraced clasped-purlin roof.
At the northern two-bay stable, there are a pair of blocked opposing doorways, as both stables have been united. The loft above shows evidence of only one small diamond-mullioned window, indicating it was likely used solely for storage. The second loft had three windows and may have served as a horseman's lodging. There is a large opening in the south wall, along with evidence of a shuttered original window. The first floor has been mostly removed.
