Description

This building, originally an outbuilding, is located immediately southwest of Barley House Farmhouse. It was likely constructed for industrial purposes, such as a brewhouse with a granary above, in the late 16th century. The building underwent significant remodelling in the early 19th century and again around 1980. It has two storeys and is approximately five bays wide. The structure is timber-framed, with the lower walls mostly rebuilt in 19th-century red brick and the upper storey finished in roughcast. The roof is covered with 19th-century glazed pantiles, and there is a central 19th-century chimney made of red brick. The windows are mid-20th-century casements, with some diamond-mullioned windows that have been restored and glazed. The building connects to Barley House Farmhouse via a 19th-century single-storey red brick block, which features a 20th-century boarded entrance door. Inside, the unmoulded framing is exposed, showcasing arch-windbraced studwork and heavy unchamfered joists. It is believed that the building was originally designed with the east gable open on the upper floor, allowing goods to be lifted from a boat on a short arm of the nearby River Deben.
