Description

The Granary and cart shelter dates from the late 18th century, with alterations made in the mid-19th century. It is primarily timber-framed with brick infill, and partially brick, and has a half-hipped plain tiled roof. The building comprises two bays and stands on two levels. The west and east sides are open at the lower level to allow cart access, with the upper level supported by three circular brick piers that have square bases, dividing the building laterally. The walls above the piers are timber-framed, featuring mainly one row of panels on the east elevation and two on the west. The gable ends have been rebuilt in brick. The north gable end retains the upper section of the wall-posts and a truncated collar and tie-beam truss. Brick and sandstone steps lead to a doorway, which interrupts the tie-beam, and there is a two-light casement window above. A square opening with a cambered head is situated in the upper level of the south gable end. The interior has not been inspected. The granary forms part of a group which includes the adjacent shelter shed and Mere Green Farmhouse.
