Description

Grumbleground Cottage is a house dating from the 17th century that was restored and extended in the mid-20th century. It features a timber-framed structure with painted brick and rendered infill, topped by a plain tiled roof. The cottage consists of two framed bays with external rebuilt chimneys at each gable end, both of which are now enclosed by 20th-century additions. It is a single storey with an attic, which includes dormers.

The framing includes three panels from the sill to the wall-plate, a collar and tie-beam truss, with three struts to the collar and a V-strut above, which are exposed at the left gable end. On the front elevation, all windows are 20th-century leaded casements; the ground floor has a pair of windows and one single 2-light window with plank weatherings. There are also two gabled dormers with 2-light windows. The entrance, located to the left of the right framed bay, features a 20th-century gabled timber-framed porch and a half-glazed door.

Although the interior was not inspected, the cottage has a single-storey extension adjoining the left gable end and a large 20th-century single-storey and attic cross-wing attached to the right gable end. Additionally, there is an outshut at the rear that runs the full length of the original part of the house. Grumbleground Cottage was once part of the Vernon Estate.
