Description
Barleyhouse Farmhouse is a former farmhouse dating from the early 16th century, with alterations made in the early 17th century. The building has two storeys and features a three-cell cross-passage entrance plan, along with a parlour block added in the early 17th century. It is constructed from timber framing and roughcast, topped with a concrete plaintiled roof that has a hipped main range and gablets.
The farmhouse includes an axial chimney made of red brick, which was rebuilt around 1980, and an early 17th-century gable chimney in the parlour wing, featuring an external recess that resembles a fireplace but has an uncertain purpose. The windows include mid-20th-century casements, several large original diamond-mullioned windows that have been restored and glazed, and others with ovolo-mullions typical of the 17th century. The entrance doorway, added in the 20th century, is located on the south side at the cross-entry.
Inside, the high-quality 16th-century framing is fully exposed and unmoulded. The parlour has arch-windbraced close-studding that is very closely spaced, along with heavy well-chamfered floor joists. There is evidence of four-centred arched doorways that have been altered in conventional positions. The crownpost roof features square posts with long two-way plank braces. There are back-to-back brick open fireplaces in the 17th-century style, which were almost completely rebuilt around 1980, with evidence of an original timber-framed chimney in the same location.
The added parlour block has plain framing and a wind-braced clasped purlin roof, along with a newel stair in an attached tower. Notably, there is an unusual two-storey splayed bay made of red brick, which was once plastered to simulate ashlar work and has altered mullioned windows. The parlour features a good moulded arched fireplace.
