EWHURST SOMERSBURY LANE Stables to rear of Hillhouse Farmhouse

GV II

Stable. C18 adaptation of an earlier building. Timber framed with weatherboard cladding on plinth of galleted rubblestone rebuilt in brick at west end. Plain tile roof, half-hipped at west end. One storey with loft, 4 bays. South side: stable door at centre with window on left and further doorway to dilapidated right-hand bay. Inserted window to left gable and rear right; loft door to right gable. Interior: loft ladder; remains of timber manger along rear wall with loft floor above open to facilitate feeding. Loft floor appears to be an insertion, and makes use of a large-scantling chamfered cross-beam with run-out stops. Roof has coupled rafters; to left section of large scantling and with raking queen posts, clasped through purlins and wind braces; right section has apex collars. A relatively early stable which forms an integral part of the farmyard. Peter Gray and Kay Coutin, Hillhouse Farm, Ewhurst, Surrey, June 1996.
