Description
The stables at the rear of Hillhouse Farmhouse are a stable building dating from the 18th century, adapted from an earlier structure. It features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding, resting on a plinth of galleted rubblestone that has been rebuilt in brick at the west end. The roof is covered with plain tiles and is half-hipped at the west end. The building is one storey high with a loft and consists of four bays.
On the south side, there is a stable door in the center, with a window to the left and a further doorway leading to a dilapidated right-hand bay. There is an inserted window in the left gable and another at the rear right, along with a loft door in the right gable. Inside, there is a loft ladder and remnants of a timber manger along the rear wall, with the loft floor above designed to facilitate feeding. The loft floor appears to be a later addition and utilizes a large-scantling chamfered cross-beam with run-out stops. The roof structure includes coupled rafters; the left section has large scantling with raking queen posts, clasped through purlins and wind braces, while the right section features apex collars. This stable is a relatively early example and is an integral part of the farmyard.
