Description
The former stable at Hale Farm dates from around 1800 and features a timber frame with weatherboard cladding, which is partly tarred, set on a plinth of red brick laid in English bond. The roof is a replacement Welsh slate and the building is one storey high with a hayloft above, consisting of five bays. There is a wide central doorway, although the doors are missing, and the roof is half-hipped with a loading hatch on the left side.
Inside, the timber frame is intact, showcasing jowled and unjowled wall posts, with jowled corners. The walls have narrow panels and long straight wall braces. The loft is supported by chamfered cross-beams and has a floor made of overlapped boards. The roof structure includes collared principal rafter trusses, staggered butt purlins, and a square-section ridge-piece resting on yokes at the trusses.
The ground floor features a brick pavement, with the lower part of the walls lined with boards. There is a continuous wooden manger along the rear wall, which is open to the loft for filling, one stall on the left side, a pivoting harness beam in the front left corner, and a ladder leading up to the loft.
