Description
This is a late 18th-century staddle barn situated at Hale Farm. It is a timber-framed structure with weatherboard cladding, some of which has been tarred, and a plain tile roof. The barn features stone staddles, with seven spanning a width of four. A central entrance is accessed by a brick and concrete ramp, leading to a double board door—the right-hand leaf being narrower—with a wide, inserted window on either side. The roof is half-hipped. The rear of the barn has a central, boarded-up door. The right return shows a large, inserted window above which is an original loading hatch, while the left return has two later windows. Inside, the complete timber frame is visible, featuring jowled wall posts arch-braced to tie-beams, narrow panels without a mid-rail, and straight wall braces. The floor is of wide boards, some of which have been replaced, with the lower part of the walls lined with boards, some of which have been removed. The roof structure includes collared queen-strut trusses, two tiers of staggered butt purlins, a plank ridge supported on yokes at the trusses, and long raking wind braces to the outer bays.
